As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, I've been thinking about what this milestone really means here in Northeastern North Carolina. While our nation is commemorating 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, many of the communities we call home have stories that reach back even further.

From my porch to yours, with a glass of sweet tea in hand, I can't help but appreciate that every winding country road, quiet waterfront, and historic home has a story to tell. From Currituck and Camden to Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan, and Dare, our corner of North Carolina has been shaping America's story long before our nation celebrated its first birthday. Living here isn't just about owning a piece of property—it's about becoming part of a place where history is woven into everyday life.

Where America's Story Meets Our Own

Long before America became a nation, the shores of the Albemarle Sound were home to Indigenous peoples who fished its waters, traveled its rivers, and built thriving communities.

By the late 1600s, English settlers had established communities throughout the Albemarle region, making it one of the earliest permanently settled areas in North Carolina. When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, many families here were already farming the land, harvesting seafood, building ships, and raising children along these same waterways.

Our history isn't just found in textbooks—it's still alive in our small towns, lighthouses, waterfronts, churches, and family farms.

Counties That Grew Alongside America

Currituck County

Established in 1668, Currituck County is one of North Carolina's oldest counties. From the fertile farmland of the mainland to the beautiful beaches of Corolla, Currituck offers a unique blend of rural charm, coastal beauty, and rich history. For generations, families have made their living from farming, fishing, and the waters that continue to define this special place.

Pasquotank County

Also established in 1668, Pasquotank County has long served as a gateway to commerce along the Pasquotank River. Today, Elizabeth City—known as the Harbor of Hospitality—continues that tradition, welcoming visitors and residents with its historic downtown, waterfront, and close-knit community.

Camden County

Created in 1777, just one year after America declared its independence, Camden County quite literally grew up alongside the new nation. It's quiet countryside, family farms, and growing communities reflect generations of hardworking families who helped shape Northeastern North Carolina.

Dare County

Established as a county in 1870, Dare County may be younger than many of its neighbors, but the land itself is home to some of America's oldest and most significant stories. It was here on Roanoke Island that England's first attempted permanent settlement in the New World was established in 1587, giving rise to the enduring mystery of the Lost Colony. More than three centuries later, history was made again when Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the world's first successful powered flight at Kill Devil Hills in 1903. Today, from Corolla to Hatteras Island, Dare County continues to inspire with its breathtaking beaches, rich maritime heritage, and the timeless appeal of life on the Outer Banks.

Perquimans County

Established in 1668, Perquimans County is known for its colonial heritage and the charming town of Hertford. Historic homes, quiet streets, and scenic waterfront views offer a glimpse into North Carolina's earliest days while providing a peaceful place to call home.

Chowan County

Dating back to 1668, Chowan County is home to historic Edenton, one of North Carolina's most treasured colonial towns. Its beautifully preserved architecture, waterfront parks, and deep ties to America's founding remind us that history isn't just remembered here—it's lived every day.

One of the things I love most about real estate is that every home has a story.

Some have front porches where generations gathered after long days in the fields. Others overlook waters where commercial fishermen have worked for centuries. Some sit beneath towering oaks that have witnessed generations come and go. And new homes are adding another chapter, welcoming families who will create traditions and memories for years to come.

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, it's a reminder that history isn't something tucked away in museums. It's found in the places we live, the communities we cherish, and the neighbors who become lifelong friends.
